So I am back guys and yes after quite some time. Infact I am so full with news right now that I dont know where to begin with!
Though infected with so many technical glitches and hiccups, online CAT 2009 was a pleasant experience for me with me facing no technical difficulties at all on the exam day.
After giving my exam on Dec 7, 2009 I had a feeling that I screwed up my English section. But as my nature rarely allows me to regret, I just shifted gears to the post- cat big event "My Brother's Marriage"! I took a two weeks long leave , not caring much for the privilege leaves which I might have been needing just in case I get the coveted IIM calls, which looked like a distant possibility to me at that time. Needless to say, I enjoyed like crazy each and every moment of those two weeks.
28 Feb,2010: That morning I was anxious as I knew it was high time the CAT results were declared. Even though I was sceptical about my results, the pre-result goosebumps is something with which I am diseased since childhood. And then the announcement came,
"Get CAT 2009 Scores " .. I clicked it with my heart skipping a beat.
After some bull shit written on the page was "Take me to CAT 2009 scorecard!" Clicked it.
The result was infront of me, the product of my last one year's effort. It was a decent percentile, with me scoring equally in all the sections. Though not very hopeful with the score, Santo da consoled me with the fact that the scores were consistent across all the sections.
After making some frantic calls to my friends, I came to know that IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Shillong had put up the short list. My heart beat was so loud, I could literally hear them . An unknown expectation had besieged me . Santo da was besides me, equally excited!
"Shortlisted Candidates for IIMs
IIM Ahmedabad- Click Here"
And yes!! My serial number was there!! We both shouted like crazy...
"IIM Shillong- Click Here" and I was there also!
With these two in my bag, I was silently confident about a perfect "BLACKIS" Call and a perfect "blackis" it was :) :) The first step towards an IIM seat was complete.
18 Mar, 2010: The first interview was scheduled pretty fast leaving absolutely no time to prepare. It was the IIM B call. My dream college.
Essay/PI Venue: IIM B, 9AM.
8.15AM: I was still at home searching for the car keys which I somehow misplaced the day before. Out of tension, Petla was shouting as he always does when he feels the situation is getting screwed. Everyone in the house, Bou , Santo da was looking for it but in vain.
8.35 AM: I decided to leave as the key showed no signs of showing up. In formals and almost running, I reached the BTM bus stand and crossed the road.
"Auto! Chalega kya IIM B." a gruntled no by the autowala....
"Paisa jyada le lena. Chalo Bhai".. still a no...... followed by similar negations by around three more auto walas.
8:40AM: I decided to try my luck at the other side of the road which would have actually increased the total distance to IIM B . But I had to take the risk. I was feeling like the IIM B selection procedure had already started with my coolness and negotiating skills being put to test.
"Auto , IIM B"
"Rs 50"
"Ok Chalo" He had no idea how much more i was willing to pay!
I must be thankful to the autowala who showed the emergency in his driving to reach my destination just on time.
8.58AM: I was running to the IIM building . I solved the maze to reach my interview spot by carefully negotiating my way through the board signs " IIM B interview -> " scattered here and there.
Bibhash da's sms " Goi pali ne?? " (Did u reach?? )
9.ooAM: I replied "Yes, Just now." got the best wishes. I thanked my stars for making me reach the spot. Though, two other guys in the same panel as me didnt make it on time . May be they decided to skip. Can anyone really skip IIMB ? May be .. may be not..
9:05AM: In the essay room, topic was " Union budget is an useless exercise as the policies are never implemented properly and unforseen situations like recession can shatter the entire plan"
10mins to think and 20mins to write was just too much time. I wrote a near perfect essay filling it with facts and figures and taking a stand against the topic. I was lucky as I had reviewed the budget plan the night before. :)
9:35AM: outside once again, discussing with a few guys about the essay.
And then the long wait for the interview started, as I was the last guy to be interviewed. After studying my competitors for sometime, I had that unknown confidence that today would be one of my best performances. I kept that belief and didnt divert myself too much by discussing with the other guys in detail about how the interviews were going. Though, I had the information that the interviewers were cool.
"Innovation is successful disobedience" was written on one of the walls.
12:20 PM: I was invited in.
Me: Good afternoon Sir.
P1: So Mr Subrata, you must be hungry huh..
Me: No Sir
P1: No?
Me: Had a good breakfast, Sir. ( I Lied . I was damn hungry! )
P1: But that was long back.. Anyways,.. so as u are the last guy, you must be already knowing what we have been asking huh..
Me: Not exactly sir, as i didnt ask in details to the interviewees about what exactly is being asked inside.
P1: SO were u sitting aloof not talking to anyone?
Me: No Sir, I have a general idea about the interviewers mood and the flow of the interviews. But I didnt go into specific details as I just want to be myself here without being encumbered by the experiences of others.
P1: Ok..so what shall we ask you?
Me: You can ask me about my life, my achievements, work experience...
P1: Ok tell me about your achievements..
Me: BLah - blah..
P1: Tell me 3 significant events of 2009..
Me: could ans only two ...
P2: gave me some numerical to calculate the longitude of a place by giving the time difference between two places.
Me: Solved it but after taking some time.
P2: work ex
Me: BLah-blah..
P3: again on work ex
Me: More confident blah-blah.
P3: about hardware companies difficulties..
Me: no technology parks, no govt funding .. compared to china which funds massively in hardware companies. Spoke about anti dumping case and all...
P2: Ok that wil be enough.. Thank you.
Me : Thanking everyone
P1: Do u ve to ask anything.
Me: No sir
P1: NO?
Me: I dont have to ask anything right now sir.
P1: Ok
Me: (forgot if i thanked them once again b4 leaving)
12:45PM: Came outside feeling confused. Is IIM B gone or m I in? This was the college I dreamed of joining everyday of my stay in bangalore.
